Description:
Many of you attended an LBG led meeting last May, kindly hosted
by Linklaters, to hear more about National Citizen Service and to
consider how LBG members might be able to add value to this
programme through employee volunteering. This was partly in
response to feedback at the previous LBG annual meeting from some
members looking for more employee volunteer opportunities.
We came up with some great engagement ideas at the meeting (see
below) but the timing was a little too late for last years
pilots.
This year there are 29 NCS providers delivering some 2000 third
year NCS pilots which will engage circa 30,000 young people across
95% of Local Authority areas in England.
More info about the NCS programme can be found here .
The NCS students will take part in 7-8 week programmes from June -
September 2012 including two residential weeks and design and
deliver a local social action project.
The opportunity for business volunteers and business resources to
add value to these pilots and social action projects and help shape
our future generation are broad and include:
- Face to face or telephone mentors
- Workshop delivery on the residential weeks (e.g. CV writing,
interview skills, budget management) Business orientation visits to
the workplace.
- Assessing NCS teams proposed Social Action Projects (Dragons
Den style)
- Hosting celebration events
- Business teams working with NCS teams to deliver Social Action
projects
I hope you will be able to join us as this Cabinet Office hosted
LBG and NCS Provider networking event. We will hear more
about the evaluation of and future plans for NCS from the Minister;
from an NCS student team and will then have the opportunity for LBG
members to 'speed network' with the 2012 Providers - who knows it
could be love at first 'site !'
It's an opportunity to hear where and how they are delivering
their pilots and see if there is an opportunity for your business
to add value by sharing skills, volunteers and/or in kind
resources. We have made it clear this is not about
funding.
I think this is a great opportunity to raise the profile of LBG
and its members and an exciting opportunity for some great
volunteering opportunities.
The central London venue is currently being arranged and the event
will run from 12 - 3.30. Numbers are likely to limited and
places allocated on a first come first served basis so please
register your interest here if you or a colleague would like to
attend
Many thanks
Pam Webb
